Going Fast: The Fresh Fish of Venice. NY Times, March 3, 2004. The low-down on fish in
Venice and where to go to get the freshest.

Fast Food, the Venetian Way.  NY times, May 23, 2004.  If you've been to Venice, you know how
difficult is to find a good, reasonably-priced restaurant and one that isn't filled with tourists.
Here is the low-down on where to go.
Flights
Since 9/11, many nonstop flights to Italy have been removed form the airlines' schedules.  For
example, a popular flight for us Kansas Citians to travel to northern Italy, American's
Chicago-Milan, is no longer available.  We have to now be more creative to get cheap flights
and good connections.
Airlines
More popular search engines such as Expedia and Travelocity will not pick up the multitude of
European airlines that do not service the U.S.  Many of these airlines are the equivalent of
Southwest and AirTran, and are viable choices.  The problem is that you will need to create your
own itinerary.  But if you're looking at $1000+ flights for that summer flight to Italy, it may be an
option.

itasoftware.com.  We all know about Expedia and Travelocity.  This one you may not know
about.  It was created by scientists at MIT and claims to provide the most complete list of flight
options.  The nice thing about this site is that it focuses on finding the best connections,
although you cannot purchase tickets through the site.  A recent comparison with the more
popular sites confirmed their claim --- add it to your research tool list!
Driving
Road signs for Italy.  If you haven't done much driving in Italy, the road signs can be confusion.
This site will describe in English most of the common signs you'll encounter.  For the rest of
Europe, check out

Travel agencies and tour guides
Travels With Taste.  Local owner Mariann Vanderberg's  focus is on people who are looking for
an out of the ordinary travel experience.  In Spring 2004, she took a group from the Friends of Art
at the Nelson-Atkins on an art tour in Tuscany.  For next year, she is planning a garden tour in
the north.
Antico Sole Italy.  Kansas City native, Jennifer Cowden Cusenza, lives with her husband
Daniele in Montespertoli, in the Tuscan countryside outside of Florence.  She owns and
operates a tour business called Antico Sole Italy, Inc., putting together customized itineraries,
including hotel recommendations and reservations, restaurant and shopping suggestions,
transportation assistance, privately guided tours, and travel tips.

Other tips
awardplanner.com.  If you have ever tried to use frequent flier miles to get to Europe, you know
the frustration of hearing that no seats are available
for the entire month in which you want to
travel, on any day, on any flight!
There are many tricks and techniques that many of us will not
know about.  This site, for a $40 fee, will try all of those (e.g., alternate routes, partner airlines.)
seatguru.com provides you with recommendations for choosing the best seats (or avoid the
worst seats) on flights, which is obviously important on overseas flights.  Covers most major
airlines.
thebathroomdiaries.com.  Not quite sure how you can use this, but if you want to know where
the best public bathrooms are in major Italian cities, check this out.  Honestly, though, nothing
beats going to a cafe, ordering a coffee, acting like you visited just to drink the coffee, and then
casually stroll to the back to visit the facilities.  The site has listings for other countries too.

quite a bit of travel and other information on Trieste, Italy.  His interest stems from time spent
there while participating in an internship.
